Army sailors use ropes made with Honeywell’s best-in-class, ultra-lightweight Spectra® fibre
MORRIS PLAINS, N.J., December 6, 2016—Honeywell (NYSE: HON) announced today its sponsorship of Team Army, a United Kingdom-based charity that promotes sports within the military and the rehabilitation of wounded soldiers. This is the fourth year Honeywell has sponsored Team Army.
Team Army athletes are soldiers injured in combat. These athletes will participate in 39 sea races throughout the year using sailing ropes that contain Honeywell’s high-strength and ultra-lightweight Spectra® fibre on the Team Army yacht British Soldier. Spectra-based ropes help reduce the weight of the boat to increase speed. These ropes are lighter than others and naturally buoyant, as they do not absorb water or deteriorate in water. This makes them ideal for use in and around the water in the pursuit of speed.

Team Army is dedicated to promoting excellence and increasing opportunities for wounded warriors as they recuperate and rehabilitate after injuries. Competitive sports play a key role in this recovery process. Team Army financially supports a variety of U.K. Ministry of Defence sports teams including boxing, cricket, cycling, fencing, golf, rugby, squash, angling and sailing.

In previous years, the Team Army angling teams have also used Spectra-based fishing line because it is thinner, more sensitive and more durable than lines made with other materials. Spectra fibre enables anglers to cast further, spend less time on broken lines and instantly feel the slightest fish movement.
In addition to sailing ropes and fishing line, the strength and light weight of Honeywell Spectra fibre make it ideal for a wide range of other applications including lifting and rescue ropes, and ropes used in adventure sports like kite-surfing and parachuting. Spectra fibre is also widely used in bullet-resistant body and vehicle armour.
Spectra fibre is made from ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene using a patented gel-spinning process. It has up to 60 percent greater strength than alternate aramid fibre and, pound for pound, it is 15 times stronger than steel but is light enough to float. Spectra fibre is used to create Spectra Shield, an advanced ballistic-resistant material. Spectra Shield technology is a patented Honeywell process designed to optimize the ballistic performance characteristics of Spectra as well as aramid fibre.
